An exhibition of contemporary art prints at the New York Public Library has created a mild stir. The NY Times has reported that a number of library patrons have protested because of a series of 8 digital prints in the "Multiple Interpretations" exhibition called "Line Up." The Line Up series by Nora Ligorano and Marshall Reese depicts people from the Bush administration in fake mugshots. The slates that they hold have the dates of lies or exaggerations about Iraq spoken by the holder. For example, President George W Bush in his State of the Union address on January 28 (my birthday!), 2003, reported, "Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa…. He clearly has much to hide."

"It is at first mildly shocking to come upon such bluntly partisan artwork on a New York Public Library wall. Biting political satire is deeply a part of printmaking history — see Goya, James Gillray and Daumier — but handmade prints are no longer a significant form of political communication, and we don’t expect anything so brazenly tendentious in the public library context." My opinion on the situation is that politics and art don't happily mix, but I do love a good political cartoonist. I think artists should have the right to say things that are political though, without it costing them their freedom. Most political art has a very short shelf life, just like the politicians they depict. The best way to make political art live a little longer is to hire a bunch of protestors to march at the exhibition or to have the artist put in prison.

There's an exhibition on at the Barbican Centre of arts in London that explores the subject of Sex. "Seduced: Art and Sex from Antiquity to Now" shows the porn art of Jeff Koons, Pablo Picasso, Nobuyoshi Araki, Francis Bacon, Robert Mapplethorpe, Rembrandt van Rijn, Andy Warhol and more. "Seduced explores the representation of sex in art through the ages. Featuring over 300 works spanning 2000 years, it brings together Roman sculptures, Indian manuscripts, Japanese prints, Chinese watercolours, Renaissance and Baroque paintings and 19th century photography with modern and contemporary art." Barbican. I found it interesting that the exhibition has a MySpace page and the Barbican gallery has a Facebook page. A lot of art museums and arts organizations have failed to take full advantage of the Internet so far.

A nude sculpture of the pop star Britney Spears clutching a dead bear rug has been creating a bit of a stir recently. The work by Daniel Edwards, titled "Monument to Pro-Life: The Birth of Sean Preston" shows Spears naked, pregnant, and sensually bent over on her knees. The artist said this about the pose.. "The image from behind of the kneeling pose is very strong so I felt the front of the sculpture needed an equally powerful image which is where the bearskin comes in." Spears Sculpture on Display Next Month "The gallery said it received about 3,000 e-mails from around the world in just a week, split between anti-abortion and abortion rights opinions." "We also got calls from Tokyo, England, France. Some people are upset that Britney is being used for this subject matter," said gallery co-owner David Kesting. "Others who are pro-life thought this was degrading to their movement. And some pro-choice people were upset that this is a pro-life monument." ABC News The Britney Spears nude sculpture will be exhibited at the Capla Kesting gallery in Brooklyn, USA in April.

Damien Hirst's New Shark The British artist Damien Hirst plans to tread water and earn up to £24 million doing it. His iconic work of a dead shark floating in formaldehyde, "The Physical Impossibility Of Death In The Mind Of Someone Living" completed in 1991 has been one of the works to be repeated. The original was sold last year to the American Steve Cohen for £7 million ($12 million), while the new derivative work of the dead shark "The Wrath of God" sold to the Samsung Museum in South Korea for £2.28m ($4 million). The new shark has also come from Australia, but it is also less than half the size of the 1991 original. Hirst earns £2m at the shark factory "Among the apparently derivative artworks are a shark in formaldehyde, which has gone for £2.28m, and a work involving three preserved sheep, which is for sale at £5.7m. Even the artist, who recently put his fortune at £100m, admits that he risks treading water creatively. "I feel I am not going anywhere any more with these works. They look nice and they can sell for ever, but I am not moving forward" Times Online

There's also a Damien Hirst exhibition in Mexico, which seems to be selling too. The show is called "The Death of God" and will be showing at Galeria Hilario Galguera up until August (that's a six month long exhibition and the first exhibition for the gallery.) Damien Hirst conquers Mexico "In England if I did a show like this they would think: "Oh God, it is so obvious." Putting a skull in a painting is too obvious. Because a skull means death. But here they understand that a skull is a metaphor of transient life because Mexico has such a long history loaded with imagery. In North America I would also have problems with this show because they are so afraid of death, they hate this, they cannot look at a skull; they feel like they are under attack. It's more to do with a sense of humor failure than anything else." ArtNewspaper
